Halogen lamps in this category are designed and manufactured especially for the use in analytical instrumentation and are not intended for general lighting. Halogen lamps for analytical applications consists of precisely dimensioned and located tungsten filaments mounted in precision quartz envelopes, which usually allow transmission below 380 nm, and are often mounted in a pre-aligned base for analytical instruments.

The halogen lamp is filled with an inert gas plus a trace of halogen (normally bromine) to create a “halogen cycle.” This regenerative cycle process extends the life of the filament and reduces blackening of the bulb by preventing the evaporated tungsten from condensing on the envelope. Halogen lamps are often used with a deuterium lamp to enhance the spectral emission for analytical instrumentation in the visible range.
